Introduction to Lean

Focus on the application of Lean fundamentals, concepts, and tools in your daily work at UCSF. 

Topics include: Lean terminology, tools, and concepts; developing eyes for waste to effectively examine and identify areas for improvement in day-to-day processes and workflow; and practice applying Lean principles

A3 Thinking

Learn about this problem-solving tool and method while practicing with real-world application, plus 1:1 coaching between classes.

Topics include: understanding current state, developing problem statements and target conditions, doing root-cause analysis, and prioritizing work that needs to be done to address the problem.

A3 Thinking 102  

Apply action planning and project management skills with individual coaching to complete a cycle of change, qualifying for Lean Level 1 Practitioner Certification. 

Topics include: useful process measures, developing deeper countermeasures for the root cause, "Plan-Do-Check-Adjust (PDCA)" approach to assessing countermeasure effectiveness, catchball and peer review

Lean Practitioner
Certification


UCSF's Program Management Office is an in-house department who provides Lean Practitioner Certification to UCSF employees.

Earn your certification at UCSF through:

  • Meeting training criteria
  • Demonstrating application of A3 Thinking and Lean tools
  • Presenting your A3, results and learnings to your supervisor, teammates and leadership
Project Management Institute (PMI)

PMI is a highly renowned external certifying agency that offers several project management certifications.

UCSF provides no-cost eCourses to help you learn about the PMI certification process, prepare you for certifying exams and/or gain continuing education units (CEUs): training credits required for earning or maintaining certification -

Six Sigma Belts

Six Sigma is a highly recognized professional certificate awarded in levels as belt colors (similar to earning martial arts belts). There are many institutions external to UCSF who provide Lean Six Sigma certification.

UCSF provides no-cost eCourses to help you learn more about Six Sigma and prepare you for taking certifying exams -

Skillsoft and LinkedIn eCourses are available at no cost to UCSF employees for earning continuing education units (CEUs) or simply expanding your knowledge. Certifying vendors/organizations (such as PMI) may host additional costs or exams to complete initial certification, which are not covered or administered by UCSF Learning & Organization Development, however you may seek professional development funding and leave through your department or other sources - Learn more about Certifications & Continuing Education resources.
