Work-based training and externship opportunities with job placement support for in-demand healthcare and administrative fields

Whether you work at UCSF already or are interested in joining our renowned workplace, our workforce development programs can give you tools to help support your career pathway. 

UCSF does not use race, gender, sex, or other protected categories or proxies for protected categories in the selection process. Clinical Research Coordinator      
  • Are you: A UCSF employee, local graduating senior, recent graduate, or community member interested in a career as a Clinical Research Coordinator to support the daily activities of a clinical study?
  • This program: is composed of a two-week training and a 20-hour shadowing experience, based on core competencies for the clinical research professional as well as career training, occurring July 28-December 31, 2025. Designed to prepare a more diverse clinical research workforce that will impact the diversity of research participants, ultimately advancing inclusive research and health equity.
  • Get involved: Apply for the Fall cohort by 11:59pm, April 17, 2025. Submission requirements include a high school diploma/GED, CV/resume and contact information for two to three references.
Clinical Research Coordinator - Monica McLemore Certification Scholarship     
  • Are you: a Clinical Research Coordinator at UCSF interested in advancing your career development and upward mobility?
  • This program: A USCF sponsored full award to cover the cost of your becoming SoCRA (Society of Clinical Research Associates) certified, including the  membership fee, exam fee and computer-based testing fee.

Excellence Through Community Engagement Learning (EXCEL, clerical/administrative)    

  • Are you: a San Francisco community member not currently employed by UCSF, and interested in starting a career in clerical or administrative employment opportunities in the healthcare sector?
  • This program: uses both classroom and on-the-job training. After completing 9 weeks of computer, administrative, customer service, and medical terminology training, participants are placed in paid 4-month clerical/administrative internships at UCSF.

Partnership with Jewish Vocational Services, UCSF Temporary Employment Program, UCSF Office of Community & Government Relations, and various UCSF Campus and UCSF Medical Center departments.

IT Support Training Program      
  • Are you: a community member or UCSF employee interested in starting a career in technology and IT Support?
  • This program: is an upcoming initiative which will combine technical skills training, career readiness, and hands-on experience. Participants can expect structured support, including potential internship opportunities and post-training guidance to help them launch sustainable careers in tech.
  • Get involved: Applications are currently closed and this site will be updated when the program resumes. UCSF is actively developing a new IT Pathway Program to prepare participants for high-demand roles such as IT support specialists. For questions, contact [email protected].

Partnership with Grow with Google and UCSF to train unemployed or under-employed workers, with priority to populations historically excluded in the tech sector.

Medical Assistant Program (EKG + MA + CPT1 Certifications)  

For UCSF Employees

  • Are you: a UCSF employee interested in a career as a Medical Assistant, Phelbotomist, or EKG Technician?
  • This program: Designed in an accelerated format in 10-months, Monday-Thursday (virtual sessions, 5:30-7:30pm), Fridays for independent study and homework, and in-person labs on Saturdays (8:30am-12pm). Participants will learn how to perform electrocardiograms, administer medications, take vitals and maintain equipment in an ambulatory care setting. In addition, participants engage in a five-week Ambulatory externship. By the end of this program, participants obtain 3 certifications to support their career exploration and advancement.
  • Get involvedApplications open until November 21, 2024 for classes that begin in February 2025. Those shortlisted will be invited for a 1:1 discussion to share their interest and discuss program details.

Partnership with Bay Area Medical Academy

For Community Members who are not currently UCSF Employees

  • Are you: a community member interested in a career as a Medical Assistant?
  • This program: Designed in an accelerated format to provide Medical Assistant training in 5-months. Participants will receive training to ensure preparedness for the Medical Assistant certification. Participants learn how to perform electrocardiograms, administer medications, take vitals, and maintain equipment in an ambulatory care setting.

Practice Coordinator
  • Are you: a community member or UCSF employee interested in advancing your administrative skills toward employment in the healthcare administration field?
  • This program: is a 16-week paid Practice Coordinator training opportunity for 40 hours a week at $26.32/hr at UCSF, with 4 weeks of live virtual training on electronic medical record systems (APeX/EPIC), customer service and job-seeking support.
  • Get involved: Applications are ongoing for up to four cohorts a year.

Radiologic Technologist Training and Leadership Academy
  • Are you: a community member or UCSF employee interested in one of the most in-demand healthcare careers? Have you taken our Practice Coordinator or Medical Assistant training and are you ready to take your next career step? Prerequisites include Associate’s degree or higher (in any field); US citizenship or permanent residency; being at least 18 years of age; clear ARRT® ethics review; and coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and college algebra or higher, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 by the time of program start.
  • This program: is an 18-month full time training program in Diagnostic Imaging and preparation for the ARRT® board certification to help students become a radiologic technologist. Curriculum includes coursework, exams, labs and clinical experiences. The academic and leadership training occurs online, at UCSF, or at partner locations.   • Get involved: start your application for the 2026 program due by November 17, 2025. Cohort 1 program start for the 18-month program begins June 2026. Cohort 2 will begin January 2028, and applications may be released around February 2027. The application process involves an admissions review, which may advance to interviews (fall) and acceptance (winter). Tuition fee is $15,000. Eligible applicants may receive benefits such as tuition waivers, salary subsidies and schedule flexibility coordinated with managers based on application review.
