UCSF Diversion Prevention and Impairment Identification Training

About: 30 minute training designed to provide health employees with the knowledge and tools necessary to identify, prevent, and address drug diversion and impairment within the workplace. Developed and approved through the Diversion Prevention Committee and consistent with the best national practices.

Purpose: Covers identification of diversion, reporting procedures and organizational culture, aligning with ASHP Guidelines on Preventing Diversion of Controlled Substances. Recent DEA enforcement actions have resulted in significant penalties for healthcare institutions with inadequate diversion prevention programs, including a $250,000 fine to Palomar Health for fentanyl diversion. Diversion directly threatens patient care through inadequate pain control, medication errors and infection risks when medications are tampered with.
